this morning we found two white chickens killed after a struggle – two black chickens have not come home. we are now down to six hens and a rooster!

we started with 2 hens and a rooster
then
the hens turned into roosters! – yes this does happen
then
denis gave me 6 black hens (marans) and 6 white hens (sussex) for my birthday
then
one black chicken found dead – we suspected our dog whitey
then
another black hen’s feathers found – never found the body
then
we kept them in the tractor (briefly!)
then
one of the first transsexual hen/rooster’s legs got caught whilst moving the “tractor”
s/he then died
then
we put an electric fence around the chicken tractor
but
the chickens got out anyway – only offered protection when they were in
then
whitey got tapped on the nose by the fence
so
she never goes near the orchard where the chooks and goats live
then
i found the second transsexual hen/rooster parralised but alive – s/he then died
so
the real rooster was king! with 10 hens – the ideal number per rooster!
now
down to 6 hens – unless the other two black hens turn up (hope!)

going to the farm shop to get the right kind of electric fence to keep the chooks in/other animals out
